UTSA’s women’s basketball season began with a tough loss in Las Vegas, as the Roadrunners fell 69-51 to the UNLV Lady Rebels at the Thomas & Mack Center on Friday. Junior Damara Allen anchored the UTSA attack with a career-high 17 points, but she was the lone player to reach double figures in a game defined by offensive stagnation. The Roadrunners shot just 26.7% from the field and committed 21 turnovers, making it difficult to keep pace with a UNLV squad that controlled the tempo throughout the contest.
Roadrunners struggle with 21 turnovers and 26.7% shooting in Las Vegas opener
UNLV seized control early in the second quarter, executing a decisive 10-0 run to build a 27-21 halftime lead. The Lady Rebels maintained their momentum into the second half, scoring the first seven points of the third quarter to stretch their advantage. By the final stretch, UNLV had built a commanding 22-point lead, effectively ending the game before the fourth quarter concluded. Despite the lopsided score, UTSA showed defensive resilience, limiting UNLV to 32.8% shooting and forcing 18 turnovers of their own.
The defeat highlights the urgency for UTSA to refine its offensive execution as the season progresses. While Allen’s performance provided a bright spot, the team’s inability to convert shots and protect the ball against a mid-major opponent signals areas for immediate improvement. As the Roadrunners return to San Antonio, the coaching staff will focus on reducing turnovers and creating more consistent scoring opportunities beyond Allen to ensure future competitiveness.
