Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake cemented its status as a high school volleyball dynasty on Friday evening, securing its 24th consecutive Section 2 Class AA championship. The top-seeded Spartans dismantled No. 2 seed Bethlehem with a commanding 3-0 sweep (25-20, 25-16, 25-13) at Saratoga Springs High School, extending a record-breaking streak that now spans over two decades. This victory marks the program’s 31st overall title, further solidifying its position as the most successful girls’ volleyball program in the region.
Gary Bynon’s Spartans extend historic streak with dominant sweep of Bethlehem
The Spartans’ dominance was driven by elite ball distribution and versatile offensive firepower. Junior setter Leah Vaughan orchestrated the attack with 33 assists, keeping Bethlehem’s defense off balance throughout the match. The team’s depth was highlighted by eighth-grader Ella Tassone, who contributed 13 kills and five digs, showcasing the program’s ability to develop talent at the middle school level. Junior outside hitter Alex Wemyss emphasized the team’s tight-knit culture, noting that the group’s friendship and continuous development were key factors in their sustained success.
Head coach Gary Bynon, who has guided the team to 24 straight titles, shifted the narrative from legacy to individual achievement. “We’re not here to repeat history. We’re here to make it,” Bynon told his players before the final. By framing the victory as belonging solely to the current roster, Bynon ensured the players took ownership of the milestone. Ranked third in the state Class AA poll, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake leaves the sectional tournament with a perfect record and a renewed focus on the upcoming state playoffs.
