The top-seeded Greenwich Cardinals extended their perfect season to 20-0 by defeating No. 2 Trumbull 3-1 (25-21, 25-27, 25-22, 25-13) Friday night at Stamford High. This victory marks Greenwich’s second consecutive FCIAC championship and their fifth overall title in program history. The Cardinals enter the CIAC tournament as the clear favorites, having demonstrated superior depth and tactical discipline throughout the match.

Unbeaten Cardinals dominate final two sets to secure fifth overall championship

Junior libero Bailee Dayon was the engine behind Greenwich’s defensive surge, recording 27 digs, 13 assists, and 15 service points. Her ability to read the Trumbull attack proved decisive in the final two sets, where Greenwich tightened its blocking game. “I think we set up a very great block the last two sets and it made it easier for me to read,” Dayon said. Coach Marianna Linnehan praised Dayon’s consistency, noting that the team successfully neutralized Trumbull’s Mckenzyi Bell, who had dominated from the front row earlier in the match.

Offensively, Greenwich relied on a balanced attack led by Kayah Armstrong and Heidi Zieme, who posted 20 kills and 16 kills respectively. Armstrong also contributed two blocks, while Zieme added 16 digs. The middle of the court was anchored by Victoria Sullivan, who dished 25 assists alongside 15 digs, and Beatriz Lisboa Da Cunha De Freitas, who recorded 20 assists. With their undefeated record intact, the Cardinals now turn their attention to the CIAC playoffs, aiming to add a state title to their growing trophy case.
