NFL Viewership Stabilizes After Early-Season Declines as League Nears Midway Point

The NFL has successfully reversed its early-season ratings slump, with viewership climbing 3% year-over-year entering Week 9. According to a report by Austin Karp in the Sports Business Journal, this recovery brings the league back in line with historical norms after a shaky start. However, analysts caution that the statistical lift may be partially artificial, stemming from Nielsen’s recent methodological changes to how co-viewing is measured. While The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel noted these adjustments raised baseline college football viewership by 3.4%, it remains unclear if the NFL is experiencing a similar inflation effect, especially given the league’s public opposition to the new metrics before the season began.

Nielsen methodology shifts and marquee matchups drive a 3% year-over-year rebound in ratings.

Despite the ambiguity surrounding the measurement methodology, the absolute numbers demonstrate robust audience engagement. NFL telecasts are currently averaging 18.4 million viewers through Week 8, a strong performance for the league’s midway point. The Kansas City Chiefs have emerged as the primary drivers of this success, claiming the top two spots for the year’s most-watched games on CBS. The Chiefs’ October clash with the Las Vegas Raiders averaged 28.45 million viewers, while last weekend’s matchup against the Denver Broncos drew 28.18 million, underscoring the team’s continued dominance in the ratings war.

Fox Sports also secured significant wins with the next two most-watched contests, highlighting the competitive nature of the broadcast landscape. The Commanders-Cowboys game in September attracted 27.21 million viewers, followed by the 49ers-Seahawks showdown in October with 26.70 million. These figures suggest that while the Chiefs are leading the charge, high-stakes NFC and NFC West rivalries remain critical for sustaining high viewership. As the league approaches the halfway mark, the combination of marquee matchups and potential methodological boosts has stabilized the NFL’s audience base, setting a strong foundation for the second half of the season.
