Rinky Hijikata delivered one of the biggest upsets of the season by defeating Novak Djokovic at the Paris Masters, a result that has instantly complicated the race for the year-end No. 1 ranking. The 21-year-old Australian displayed immense composure against the 24-time Grand Slam champion, neutralizing Djokovic’s trademark aggression with a relentless serve-and-volley approach. This victory not only extends Hijikata’s impressive run on the hard courts of Europe but also signals a significant shift in momentum heading into the crucial final weeks of the 2024 ATP Tour.
Key Match Highlights & Tactical Analysis
Statistically, the match highlighted Hijikata’s tactical maturity and physical resilience. He held serve with precision, limiting Djokovic’s opportunities to dictate points from the baseline, while his return game consistently pressured the Serbian’s second serves. By maintaining a high first-serve percentage and converting key break points, Hijikata neutralized the experience gap, proving that his recent surge in form is no fluke. The win adds substantial ranking points to his total, keeping him firmly in contention for a top-10 finish and a potential spot in the ATP Finals.
This result leaves the Live Race for the year-end No. 1 title wide open, as Djokovic’s loss creates a window for rivals like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz to close the gap. For Hijikata, the psychological boost of beating the greatest player of his generation cannot be overstated, providing the confidence needed to challenge the elite in the upcoming finals. As the season enters its decisive phase, this upset serves as a reminder that the ATP Tour’s hierarchy is fluid, and emerging talents are ready to seize historic opportunities.
