Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves is silencing critics with elite efficiency and clutch performances, drawing high praise from former mentor Erik Spoelstra. Despite ongoing debates about whether Reaves can serve as the team’s true second star in the pursuit of an NBA championship, his recent statistical output suggests he is delivering at an All-Star level. Through the first nine games of the season, Reaves is averaging 23.3 points on 53.1% field-goal shooting and 42.9% from three-point range, alongside 3.2 rebounds and five assists per game.
Heat coach highlights Reaves’ intangibles and elite efficiency amid championship doubts.
Reaves’ impact was on full display during the Lakers’ recent winning streak, where he showcased his offensive versatility against top-tier defenses. In Monday’s 138-117 victory over the Miami Heat, Reaves scored 27 points on efficient 10-of-15 shooting, including four made three-pointers out of five attempts. He maintained that momentum in Wednesday’s 116-103 win over the Sacramento Kings, contributing 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting. These performances underscore his ability to sustain high-level output while managing turnover concerns that have plagued his season thus far.
The endorsement from Spoelstra, who coached Reaves as an assistant with Team USA during the 2023 FIBA World Cup, adds significant weight to the guard’s growing reputation. Spoelstra emphasized that Reaves is first and foremost a competitor who operates on both ends of the floor. “He’s a winning player,” Spoelstra stated, noting that while the term lacks a specific definition, it is evident in the intangibles a player brings to the team. For the Lakers, Reaves’ blend of high skill level and competitive fire may be the key ingredient needed to elevate the roster to championship contention.
