Norfolk State (2-0) secured a decisive 78-71 victory over Randolph on Wednesday, leveraging a stifling defensive effort to neutralize the WildCats’ offensive threats. The Spartans dominated the contest with six steals, led by Jordan Skyers, who anchored the backcourt with his disruptive presence. This defensive pressure forced Randolph into difficult shots and turnovers, allowing Norfolk State to control the tempo and maintain a lead that never wavered significantly in the final stretch.
Defensive intensity and balanced scoring power Spartans to second straight win
Offensively, the Spartans displayed impressive versatility, with three players scoring in the 19-point range or higher. Skyers led the charge with a game-high 22 points, while Bahsil Laster provided a crucial spark with 20 points, shooting 6-for-10 from the field and converting 8 of 10 free throws. Laster also facilitated the offense with seven assists, showcasing his dual threat ability. Chris Walker added 19 points, demonstrating efficiency with a 6-for-10 shooting clip and perfect 4-for-4 performance from the free-throw line, including three made three-pointers.
Randolph fought back with Khalil Caple posting a 21-point, seven-rebound, and three-steal performance, while Chase James contributed a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Say’Quan Welsh added 11 points and three steals for the WildCats, but their efforts were not enough to overcome Norfolk State’s balanced attack. The Spartans now turn their attention to their next matchup, visiting William & Mary on Sunday to continue their strong start to the season.
