San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa returned to team practice on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in his recovery from a left calf injury that sidelined him for the past five games. Bosa was listed as a limited participant, a crucial step in his rehabilitation process following a season plagued by persistent physical challenges. His return to the field underscores the 49ers’ defensive resilience and provides a vital boost to a unit that has missed his dominant pass-rushing presence since Week 3.
Defensive star clears hurdle, signaling readiness for the long haul despite recent setbacks.
The path to this return has been arduous, beginning with a torn right ACL sustained against the Arizona Cardinals in September 2025. Although Bosa underwent surgery in late September 2026 and initially returned to practice in early September, he subsequently dealt with right knee tendinitis that forced the team to manage his workload. This compensation issue ultimately led to the left calf tweak during a warm-up drill. Bosa acknowledged the complexity of his recovery, noting, “I must have had some type of compensation going on… I was just doing my normal warm-up drills one day, and I tweaked it.”
Despite the setbacks, Bosa’s mindset remains focused on longevity and consistency. “It’s a long year, and I kind of just reminded myself that I need to be ready for the long haul,” Bosa stated via the San Francisco Chronicle. While his return is positive, the 49ers still face depth challenges, as wide receiver Mike Evans remains out with rib and Achilles issues, and running back Christian McCaffrey’s status continues to be monitored. Bosa’s limited participation suggests a cautious approach, but his presence on the practice field is a strong indicator that he is nearing full availability for the remainder of the season.
