St Helens Rugby League has confirmed that chief executive Abi Ekoku is resigning from his role, citing personal family commitments as the primary driver for his departure. Ekoku, who previously served as the interim CEO of the Rugby Football League (RFL), joined the Super League club in April following the exit of Mike Rush. In an official statement, the club acknowledged Ekoku’s “commitment and contribution” while noting that he will be returning to London to be closer to his family.
Saints appoint Joe Nicholl as COO as leadership reshuffle continues
To ensure operational continuity during this transition, the club has appointed director Joe Nicholl as the new chief operating officer. Chairman Eamonn McManus expressed gratitude for Ekoku’s service during a period described as “very challenging” for the organization. McManus specifically highlighted the personal sacrifices Ekoku made while balancing his executive duties in St Helens with his family’s residence in London, signaling a respectful parting of ways that prioritizes work-life balance.
This leadership change marks the second significant executive shift for St Helens in a short span, underscoring the ongoing structural adjustments within the club’s management hierarchy. While Ekoku’s tenure was brief, his background in high-level rugby administration provided valuable oversight during a critical phase for the Saints. The appointment of Nicholl, an internal figure with deep club knowledge, suggests a strategic move to stabilize operations and maintain focus on the team’s competitive objectives without further disruption.
