Richfield’s path to the 3A/2A semifinals was defined by resilience after a rocky start. The Wildcats had to overcome a 31-24 loss to Grantsville in August, a game they trailed 24-10 entering the fourth quarter. That stumble served as a wake-up call, culminating in a dominant 31-7 quarterfinal victory over the same opponent. In that decisive matchup, quarterback Colton White dismantled the Grantsville defense with an 80-yard opening drive, finishing with over 150 rushing yards and three touchdowns while holding the Cowboys scoreless after the first quarter.
Colton White’s 14.2-yard average sets the stage for a rematch of last year’s 49-14 blowout
Now, Richfield faces its toughest test yet: Morgan, the team that ended their season last year with a 49-14 rout. The all-time series favors Morgan 10-3 since 1940, and the Wildcats are eager to break that recent trend. Last year’s quarterfinal defeat was painful, with Morgan scoring 21 points in the first quarter. Richfield’s only bright spot in that loss was a 58-yard touchdown pass from White to Trey Yardley, a highlight that now serves as a blueprint for what the Wildcats’ offense can achieve against elite competition.
The key to this semifinal lies in Richfield’s ground game, which ranks among the best in the state. White has been a dual-threat force, amassing 1,353 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns on just 95 carries for a staggering 14.2 yards per carry average. With 18 total touchdowns on the season—including three receiving scores and a return touch—White anchors a balanced attack. Yardley complements him with an 11.7 yards per carry average and 12 total touchdowns, including defensive scores, giving Richfield the versatility needed to challenge Morgan’s historic dominance.
