Xavier University men’s basketball delivered a decisive statement of intent on November 2, dismantling Mount St. Mary’s 97-52 in a lopsided victory at Cintas Center. The Musketeers, fresh off months of rebuilding and three exhibition contests, showed no signs of rust as they officially kicked off the 2026-27 campaign. By stepping on the gas early and maintaining relentless pressure throughout, Xavier extended its historic streak to 37 consecutive season-opening wins, silencing any lingering doubts about the team’s readiness after the offseason transition.
Pitino’s Musketeers flex new depth to secure 37th straight win in the season opener.
Head coach Richard Pitino, who navigated a tense season opener against Marist last year, finally had the luxury of showcasing the depth he touted during preseason press conferences. The 97-52 final scoreline highlighted the squad’s offensive firepower and defensive cohesion, marking a stark contrast to the previous season’s closer finishes. This emphatic performance served as an early validation of the roster’s revamped structure, proving that the Musketeers possess the talent and chemistry required to compete at the highest level in the Big East.
Key contributors included returning star Jovan Milicevic, whose presence anchored the frontcourt and provided a focal point for the offensive attack. The blowout nature of the game allowed Pitino to test various lineup combinations, giving minutes to bench players who will be crucial for the latter half of the season. As the Musketeers look ahead to the rest of their schedule, this dominant start provides a strong psychological and tactical foundation, setting the tone for a season where expectations have been significantly raised.
