Nicky Butt has launched a blistering attack on Lisandro Martínez, urging Manchester United to offload the Argentine defender following a chaotic October. The former midfielder called Martínez a “bluffer” on *Football Uncensored*, citing a pattern of costly errors that culminated in a red card during Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Chelsea. Martínez was sent off for an elbow that conceded a penalty, marking the latest in a series of defensive lapses that have left United’s backline exposed under Michael Carrick.
Former midfielder labels defender a “bluffer” after red card and board criticism
The outburst follows a tense week where Martínez publicly criticized United’s board, specifically targeting director of football Jason Wilcox for perceived inaction in the transfer window. Although the club fined the 28-year-old for his remarks, he has retained his starting position despite significant on-pitch struggles. His defensive frailties were starkly highlighted earlier this month when Tottenham’s Dominic Solanke outmuscled him to score a stoppage-time equalizer, a moment that underscored the physical and tactical vulnerabilities in United’s defense.
Butt, who played alongside Martínez and Paul Scholes, expressed that he would move the defender on if given the opportunity, dismissing his current form as unsustainable. The former United captain’s comments signal a growing disconnect between the fanbase and the squad’s leadership, particularly as Carrick’s side continues to struggle for consistency. With Martínez’s reputation now tarnished by both on-field errors and off-field friction, United faces a difficult decision on whether to retain a player who has become a focal point of criticism.
