Glamorgan opener Asa Tribe has been unexpectedly excluded from the England Lions tour of the Caribbean due to strict border controls triggered by the Ebola outbreak in East Africa. The 22-year-old, who is eligible to represent his native Jersey until he earns a senior England cap, recently completed a List A series for the associate nation in Nairobi. His immediate travel plans to join the England squad in St Kitts and Nevis were halted by a government-issued entry ban targeting recent visitors from affected regions.
St Kitts and Nevis entry ban prevents Glamorgan opener from joining squad in Caribbean.
The exclusion stems from a 21-day non-entry rule implemented by the St Kitts and Nevis government for non-nationals who have recently been in Kenya, where nine confirmed Ebola cases, including two fatalities, have been reported. This public health measure extends to seven other African countries, effectively blocking Tribe from entering the island nation despite his confirmed place in the touring party. The incident highlights the growing impact of global health crises on international sports logistics and player availability.
An ECB spokesperson confirmed the situation, stating that Tribe is currently back in the UK and that the board is in contact with relevant authorities to resolve the matter. “Asa Tribe was unable to enter Saint Kitts & Nevis, having recently travelled to Kenya,” the statement read. The development raises questions about the timing of the tour and the potential disruption to the squad’s preparation, as the England Lions continue their preparations for the upcoming Caribbean series.
