The Boston Celtics enter Monday night’s matchup with the Houston Rockets carrying a five-game winning streak, though skeptics note all victories came against teams with losing records. This contest marks Boston’s first encounter with a top-tier opponent this season, as the 5-1 Celtics travel to Texas to face the 6-1 Rockets. While the Celtics secured a 108-97 road win over the undermanned Orlando Magic on Sunday, they face a significant physical challenge playing the second night of a back-to-back. However, Boston has historically thrived under head coach Joe Mazzulla with limited rest, already holding a 1-0 record in such situations this season.
Boston’s five-game streak faces its first true test against Houston’s 6-1 start.
Houston presents a formidable hurdle, having dominated the Oklahoma City Thunder 119-98 on Friday at the Toyota Center. The Rockets’ recent form contrasts sharply with Boston’s early-season struggles, which included a frustrating loss to the Detroit Pistons in the regular-season opener. Despite the travel fatigue, the Celtics have matched their longest winning streak from last season and currently sit in third place in the Eastern Conference. No official injury report has been released for Boston yet, but the team must prepare for a high-intensity defensive effort from Houston regardless of roster availability.
This game serves as a critical litmus test for the Celtics’ true competitive standing. While one or two of their previous opponents may finish above .500, facing a top seed like Houston provides a more accurate gauge of Boston’s ceiling. The Celtics’ ability to maintain their offensive rhythm against elite defense will determine if their current momentum is sustainable or merely a product of favorable scheduling.
