Canelo Alvarez reclaimed the WBC super middleweight title in Riyadh, defeating Christian Mbilli by unanimous decision with scores of 117-110, 116-111, and 115-112. The bout served as Alvarez’s return to the ring after his loss to Terence Crawford more than 13 months ago, marking a crucial step in his career trajectory. Entering the Aztec temple-themed stage to roaring chants, Alvarez demonstrated the composure and technical precision that have defined his career, improving his professional record to 64-3-2 with 39 knockouts.
Key Match Highlights & Tactical Analysis
Although Mbilli controlled the early pace with high volume, pushing Alvarez toward the ropes and landing significant activity in rounds two through four, the Frenchman’s strategy ultimately failed to convert pressure into decisive damage. Alvarez’s counter-punching proved far more effective, as his shots were cleaner, more accurate, and harder than Mbilli’s flurries. The dynamic of the fight became clear as Mbilli repeatedly unloading and retreating, refusing to engage in the sustained exchanges where Alvarez’s elite defensive skills and power would have been most dangerous.
This victory ends Mbilli’s undefeated streak, dropping him to 29-1-1, while securing the WBC belt for Alvarez. The unanimous verdict reflects the judges’ recognition of Alvarez’s superior fight IQ and effective use of his jab and body shots to control the distance. By outboxing a busier opponent, Alvarez not only defended his status as a top-tier contender but also signaled his intent to remain a dominant force in the super middleweight division, setting the stage for future high-profile matchups.
