Jarred Vanderbilt’s status as an outlier in the Los Angeles Lakers rotation has long been defined by his offensive limitations, which initially curtailed his playing time after his 2023 trade. However, with Luka Doncic and Ziaire Williams sidelined for Wednesday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers, Vanderbilt seized the opportunity to reassert his value. He contributed 21 minutes, securing seven rebounds and posting a team-best plus-22 rating, proving that his energy and rebounding instincts remain vital components of the Lakers’ identity despite his struggles on the offensive end.
Lakers coach turns Vanderbilt’s defensive versatility into a weapon against the Clippers
The forward’s impact was most evident in his defensive assignment on Clippers center Brook Lopez, who struggled mightily with just two points on 1-of-5 shooting in the Lakers’ 103-87 victory. Vanderbilt’s ability to guard multiple positions and play with high intensity allowed him to neutralize Lopez’s presence in the paint. This performance highlighted the specific niche Vanderbilt occupies: a defensive specialist who can disrupt opposing offenses and secure critical rebounds, traits that are increasingly valuable in a league that prioritizes defensive versatility and spacing.
Following the game, head coach JJ Redick indicated that the coaching staff has identified a more effective way to utilize Vanderbilt’s skillset. Redick noted that the team reviewed a clip at halftime showing Vanderbilt fronting Lopez in the post, a tactic designed to prevent the center from establishing a comfortable position to receive the ball. By leveraging this defensive adjustment, Redick signaled a potential shift in how the Lakers integrate Vanderbilt into their regular rotation, aiming to maximize his defensive strengths while mitigating his offensive liabilities.
