Lancaster’s bid for a Central District Division I championship ended in heartbreak on Thursday, Oct. 29, as the Lady Gales fell 3-0 to Dublin Coffman at Westerville Central High School. The match hinged on momentum, with Lancaster holding a 23-20 lead in the opening set but succumbing to a 6-1 scoring run by the Shamrocks after an unforced error. That critical lapse allowed Dublin Coffman to steal the first set 26-24, setting the tone for the remainder of the contest.
Lady Gales squander first-set lead, falling 3-0 in Central District Division I title match
Once Dublin Coffman secured the opening frame, Lancaster struggled to find its rhythm, playing on its heels for the next two periods. The Shamrocks dominated the subsequent sets, winning 25-17 and 25-19 to seal the district title. The loss highlighted the high stakes of district play, where a single set can dictate the outcome of a best-of-five series.
Lancaster head coach Leslie Davenport identified the inability to close out the first set as the primary factor in the defeat. “We just couldn’t finish things off in that first set, and in that situation, you have to be able to handle the pressure,” Davenport said. “We didn’t take care of the ball in the front row when we needed to in that first set. Winning the first set would have been a whole turn of events for us.” The team now turns its attention to the offseason, having fallen short of their ultimate goal in a tightly contested district final.
