Karl Vilips seized the first-round lead at the Mexico Open on Thursday, firing a blistering 9-under 62 to open the first of two consecutive PGA Tour events in Mexico. The Estonian golfer showcased exceptional consistency on the Vidanta Vallarta layout, leveraging two powerful birdie streaks to build a significant cushion over the field. His performance was defined by aggressive yet precise play, allowing him to capitalize on every opportunity presented by the course setup.

Vilips’ round was punctuated by remarkable runs of success, including five consecutive birdies on holes 11 through 15 and a closing sequence of four straight birdies. After a brief lull in the middle of his round, where he recorded one birdie and one bogey, he regained his rhythm to finish strong. “Had it on a string for the first nine,” Vilips noted, emphasizing that keeping his drives in the fairway was crucial for his strategy. “It was lift, clean and place today… I took advantage of those drives that I hit.”
The competition remains tight behind Vilips, with Japan’s Kensai Hirata trailing by a single stroke at 8-under. A group of five players, including Ben Griffin, Marco Penge, Garrick Higgo, and Jeffrey Kang, sat at 7-under with rounds of 64. Local hero Alvaro Ortiz also delivered a standout performance, shooting a bogey-free 65 to secure his PGA Tour card for next season via the Korn Ferry Tour. Ortiz praised his flow and tee-to-green execution, setting the stage for an exciting weekend in Vallarta.
