The Cleveland Cavaliers enter the 2026-27 season with undisputed championship aspirations, powered by back-to-back 50-win campaigns under head coach Kenny Atkinson. The franchise’s trajectory shifted dramatically at the 2026 trade deadline when they acquired veteran playmaker James Harden from the LA Clippers in exchange for Darius Garland. This blockbuster move pairs Harden’s elite pick-and-roll mastery with the dynamic scoring of Donovan Mitchell, who earned All-NBA Second Team honors and finished seventh in MVP voting last season. With Mitchell locked in via a four-year, $274 million extension, the Cavs possess a formidable frontcourt duo capable of dominating any opponent in the Eastern Conference.
Harden’s Arrival Elevates Cavs’ Title Hopes as They Host the Hawks at Rocket Arena
James Harden’s integration into the Cleveland system marks a pivotal moment for the team’s offensive identity. Averaging 20.5 points and 7.7 assists after the All-Star break in his previous stint, Harden brings immediate stability and elite playmaking to the roster. His recent three-year, $97 million re-signing signals the organization’s long-term commitment to this new core. As the Hawks prepare to face this revamped squad at Rocket Arena, they will encounter a defense that has consistently ranked among the league’s best, now augmented by Harden’s ability to control game tempo and generate high-efficiency looks for Mitchell and other key contributors.
