Seven weeks into the 2024 NFL season, the Los Angeles Rams remain a statistical enigma, holding a 4-3 record that offers little clarity on their true competitive standing. The team’s losses to the Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills, and Arizona Cardinals represent significant setbacks, as all three opponents are currently positioned within the playoff picture for their respective conferences. These defeats, combined with a bizarre international opener against the San Francisco 49ers, have left analysts and fans questioning whether the Rams possess the consistency required to challenge for a Super Bowl berth or if they are merely coasting on favorable matchups.
A 4-3 record masks a team that has yet to beat a legitimate contender
The Rams’ victories have been heavily influenced by opponent adversity, further complicating their resume. The Week 2 win over the New York Giants came after starter Jaxson Dart was injured early, with replacement Jameis Winston struggling before JJ McCarthy took over. Similarly, the victory over the Philadelphia Eagles occurred during a period of severe attrition for the East Coast rivals, who were missing key contributors including DeVonta Smith, Zack Baun, Dallas Goedert, and Lane Johnson, while star running back Saquon Barkley exited early. While the Eagles’ subsequent decline is partly attributable to Jalen Hurts’ absence, the Rams’ win against a depleted roster does little to prove their ability to dominate elite, fully healthy competition.
The most recent win against the Las Vegas Raiders adds another layer of ambiguity, as the Raiders entered the game with a 3-0 start but have since slipped to 3-4. While defeating a team that began the season strongly is a positive, the Rams have yet to secure a decisive victory against a team that is currently performing at a high level. As the season progresses, the Rams must find a way to convert these close contests and questionable wins into legitimate statements of dominance, or risk being viewed as a mid-tier team that has been fortunate rather than formidable.
