Guilderland girls’ soccer has transformed its season from a mid-season crisis to a championship contender, securing a spot in the Section 2 Class AAA final after a decisive 2-1 victory over Saratoga Springs. The No. 2 seed, currently standing at 8-4-4, overcame a challenging semifinal matchup at Niskayuna High School to keep their title hopes alive. Junior forward Lauren Hickey, who opened the scoring, emphasized the emotional weight of reaching this stage, noting that the team has pursued this goal since the start of the campaign.
Lady Dutch overcome midseason slump to reach Class AAA final
The Lady Dutch’s path to the final has been defined by dramatic swings in momentum. After opening the season with four consecutive wins, Guilderland endured a difficult stretch, going 0-3-4 in seven matches while managing only three total goals. However, the team executed a robust turnaround earlier this month, posting a 4-1-0 record in its last five games. This resurgence in offensive production and defensive stability has positioned them as serious contenders for the sectional crown.
Coach Josh Binfield attributes the team’s late-season success to mental resilience, specifically the refusal to let the midseason dip define the remainder of the year. By maintaining focus and adjusting tactics during the dry spell, the staff and players rebuilt confidence to peak at the right time. Now, Guilderland prepares for the Class AAA championship match, aiming to convert their current winning streak into a historic Section 2 title.
