Lamine Yamal has ignited a fresh debate within the football community by suggesting that his Barcelona teammate, Pau Cubarsí, was the more deserving recipient of the UEFA Young Talent award. Speaking to Sky Sports, the 17-year-old winger expressed his admiration for Cubarsí’s impact, stating clearly that “Cubarsi should’ve won it.” Yamal’s comments highlight the internal dynamic at Camp Nou, where two of the club’s most promising assets are competing for individual accolades, yet the younger star prioritized his teammate’s defensive solidity over his own offensive brilliance.
Key Match Highlights & Tactical Analysis
The comment underscores the exceptional depth of talent emerging from La Masia in the 2024-25 season. While Yamal has been the face of Barcelona’s resurgence, scoring and assisting at a prolific rate, Cubarsí has established himself as a cornerstone of the backline, often playing as a left-back despite his natural center-back position. By publicly acknowledging Cubarsí’s superior claim to the award, Yamal demonstrates a level of maturity and team-first mentality that has defined his rapid ascent to the top tier of world football.
This statement adds another layer to the narrative surrounding the UEFA Young Talent award, which has historically favored attacking players with high visibility. Yamal’s defense of Cubarsí suggests that the award’s criteria may need to evolve to recognize defensive excellence and tactical intelligence equally. As both players continue to lead Barcelona’s charge in La Liga and the Champions League, their individual performances remain intertwined, with Yamal’s creativity and Cubarsí’s composure forming the backbone of a team poised for major silverware.
