New York Road Runners has successfully expanded its premier youth event to all five boroughs for the first time, welcoming nearly 5,000 young athletes aged 2 to 18 to the TCS New York City Marathon Kids Kickoff. This historic milestone coincides with the 50th anniversary of the original five-borough marathon, transforming the weekend into a citywide celebration of youth athletics. The expansion represents a significant logistical achievement, ensuring that young runners from every corner of the city can experience the marathon spirit before the main event takes over the streets next week.
Record participation marks 50th anniversary with double the youth runners from last year.
The scale of this year’s participation has doubled compared to 2025, signaling a massive surge in interest for youth running programs in the city. While thousands are spread across the boroughs over two days, Central Park serves as the primary hub on Sunday, hosting approximately 3,000 participants. The Stage 3 race specifically begins on West Drive just south of West 67th Street and concludes on Center Drive south of Terrace Drive, providing a safe and iconic setting for these young athletes to compete.
This kickoff serves as the final warm-up for the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon, scheduled for November 1. New York Road Runners, a nonprofit organization, leverages these events to build confidence and promote physical activity among children year-round through 20 free youth programs. By doubling the participant count, the organization underscores its commitment to making the marathon experience accessible to all abilities, reinforcing the event’s reputation as the “best day of the year” in the “best city in the world.”
