Barcelona enter Sunday’s El Clasico at Camp Nou with a historic opportunity, aiming to secure their tenth consecutive La Liga victory to shatter a record set by Real Madrid in 1968-69. The Catalan giants arrive with momentum from a dominant domestic campaign, yet they face a significant psychological hurdle following their 4-2 Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. This setback provides Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid with a tangible opening to disrupt their rivals’ bid for immortality and reclaim narrative control in the Spanish top flight.
Real Madrid seek to halt a historic 10-game winning streak after PSG upset
Mourinho has dismissed the relevance of his team’s recent form, citing two emphatic 4-1 victories over Sevilla and RB Leipzig, arguing that such results carry no weight in the unique context of El Clasico. The Portuguese manager emphasized the singular nature of the fixture, stating, “We are in a good dynamic, we play well, we score goals, but the Clasico is different. What we have done before has no influence.” His comments underscore a strategic focus on the immediate stakes rather than broader league statistics, framing the match as a standalone event of global magnitude.
The clash at 20:00 GMT represents more than a league position battle; it is a contest for historical legacy and global attention. Mourinho’s assertion that “the world stops” for this specific matchup highlights the immense pressure on both squads to deliver a performance worthy of the occasion. For Barcelona, the pressure to maintain their historic run is palpable, while Real Madrid views this as their prime opportunity to capitalize on their rivals’ European disappointment and assert dominance in the most high-profile fixture in world football.
