Kenny Minchey delivered a versatile performance to guide No. 12 Kentucky to a decisive 34-17 victory over Vanderbilt on Saturday night, effectively ending a two-game losing streak against the Commodores. The Wildcats (7-1, 5-1 SEC) moved into sole possession of first place in the conference standings, holding a half-game lead over No. 5 Georgia, who was idle for the week. This win marks a significant turnaround for Kentucky, which suffered a 45-17 defeat to Vanderbilt in the previous season.
Wildcats snap losing streak to seize sole SEC lead, erasing last year’s 45-17 embarrassment
The game featured a dramatic shift in momentum after Kentucky struggled to generate just 14 yards in the first quarter, falling behind 10-0. However, the Wildcats responded with explosive second-quarter offense, accumulating 146 of their 376 total yards during that period. Minchey accounted for 203 passing yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for a score. Kentucky’s defense tightened up significantly, limiting Vanderbilt to just 5 yards in the second quarter after the Commodores had dominated time of possession and gained 142 yards in the opening frame.
Despite a late surge by Vanderbilt, which saw freshman quarterback Jared Curtis throw for 242 yards and two touchdowns, the Wildcats maintained control. Kentucky scored 21 straight points to lead 21-10 before Vanderbilt cut the deficit to 21-17 with a fourth-down touchdown in the third quarter. The hosts then sealed the deal with 13 unanswered points in the final stretch, securing the win and solidifying their position at the top of the SEC.
