FIFA President Gianni Infantino has firmly rejected speculation regarding his potential resignation, asserting in a rare interview with BBC Sport that he retains the support of the “vast, vast majority” of global football. Speaking in Baku ahead of the FIFA Under-15 World Cup, the 52-year-old adopted a defiant tone when pressed on the fallout from the controversial FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal. By dismissing the notion that he should step down, Infantino signaled his intent to remain at the helm of the world governing body despite intense internal pressure.
FIFA chief laughs off resignation questions, defiantly defends controversial FFE deal in Baku
The comments come two months after a coalition of major confederations, including UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation, and Concacaf, signed a joint letter accusing Infantino of breaking trust “through deception.” This unprecedented move by the heads of three major regional bodies had fueled mounting calls for the president, who has led FIFA since 2016, to stand down. Infantino, however, framed the conflict as a necessary part of the democratic process, stating, “There is nothing bad in disagreeing… It’s OK to have different points of view, but then we need to be able to move on.”
Infantino’s public stance marks a significant shift from the behind-the-scenes negotiations that defined the early stages of the FFE controversy. By characterizing the dissent as a challenge of bringing “different points of view under one roof,” he seeks to normalize the disagreement while reinforcing his legitimacy. As the FIFA Under-15 World Cup commences, the president’s ability to unify the confederations will be closely monitored, with his continued tenure now hinging on his capacity to navigate these deep-seated institutional fractures.
